From big feelings to big jumps, toddlers between ages 2 and 3 experience explosive growth in language, motor skills, and independence. It’s a time of curiosity, boundary-pushing, and self-expression.
This age is sometimes called “the terrible twos” — but it’s also a time of tremendous transformation.

- Runs with better coordination
- Jumps in place with both feet
- Climbs on furniture and playground structures
- Begins pedaling a tricycle or using a balance bike
- Kicks a ball and throws overhand

- Vocabulary expands to 200+ words by age 3
- Follows 2-step directions (“Get your shoes and bring them here”)
- Names most familiar objects and people
- Asks “what” and “where” questions

- Begins sorting shapes and colors
- Completes simple puzzles
- Understands the concept of “mine” and “yours”
- Engages in more complex pretend play
- Shows curiosity and asks lots of questions

- Demonstrates defiance (“no!”) as autonomy grows
- May have tantrums as emotional regulation develops
- Enjoys being around other children
- Begins to take turns with help

- Offer chances to move — parks, stairs, safe climbing
- Use short, clear sentences and read together daily
- Label feelings and model calm behavior
- Set gentle but firm boundaries
- Give simple choices to support autonomy
- Encourage pretend play and imagination
⚠️ When to Call Your Pediatrician
- Doesn’t speak in short phrases by 30–36 months
- Limited eye contact or social engagement
- Frequent falls or poor coordination
- Doesn’t follow simple instructions
- Regression in previously acquired skills
